Zabaione for Two
Written and Directed by August D’Angelo
Jess is struggling with his decision to be a vegetarian. While dining at a swanky restaurant with long-lost friend Keith, he experiences a hallucination that creates a comedic story about love, food, and New Jersey.
Jess — “Could you tell us the specials tonight, Fedella?”
Fedella — “I would be delighted. We have Ostriche Ripiene con Granchio al Prosecco. These are oysters which have been filter feeding detritus and waste products from the depth of the Pacific. The oysters are stuffed with a fresh crab that has been boiled alive until bleached and blushed from black to red. (triumphantly) We then crack its exoskeleton unveiling the tender flesh, pouring upon it a champagne and hollandaise sauce.”
Jess — “Did you say detritus?”
Fedella — “Yes it IS delicious!”
Keith — “What’s the matter? You don’t look so good.”
Jess — “Did you hear that menu?”
Keith — “Of course I did. It’s fantastic! What’s wrong with you?
Jess — “That woman is sick!”

Jess — “As if you know so much about the colonization of the United States…with you being a mollusk and all.”
Oyster — “That’s right! My grandparents were there! Right there on the beach. Waitin’ when the whole thing went down.”
